No matter how many precautions one may take, one's safety in the water is never 100% guaranteed. Although we may take appropriate measures to mitigate risks, understanding the necessity of lifeguarding skills is essential for saving lives.
According to the American Lifeguard Association, around 3,300 people die from drowning every year in the United States. Lifeguards play a large role in preventing these tragedies, however, because they are not always present, it is up to us as members of our communities to educate ourselves on water safety. This can be achieved by enrolling in lifeguarding classes, learning first aid, and reading more about the dangers imposed in the water and our environments.
One of the most important skills everyone should know is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR significantly improves survival rates when quickly performed in emergencies. As members of our community, it is on us to help others when trained professionals are unavailable and/or on the way for emergency care. Taking a certified CPR class, through the Red Cross or other community centers, ensures that you'll have the essential knowledge to quickly and effectively respond in an emergency situation.
Whether it's practicing your CPR, practicing situational awareness, knowing how to contact local health support, or following rules already established by the body of water, like walking instead of running, it can greatly reduce the chances for accidents. Lifeguard training isn't just a certification, it's a set of life saving skills that contribute to everyone's water safety.
