Pool vs. Open Water Safety

When it comes to swimming, "water is water." However, the safety considerations for a backyard pool compared to a lake/river/ocean usually have many differences.
Pool Safety: Pools offer controlled conditions: clear water, known depths, and (usually) lifeguards. Despite the rather safe environment, risks are still extant: wet decks, diving injuries in shallow water, and unsupervised access.
To stay safe in the pool...
Supervise children, even in shallow water
Use self-latching gates/fences and pool covers to prevent unsupervised entry
Keep rescue equipment nearby and accessible in the case of an emergency
Open Water Safety: Lakes, rivers, and oceans introduce new variables: currents, waves, unknown depths, varying water temperatures, limited visibility, and sometimes wildlife. These conditions can tire swimmers quickly or conceal hazards.
To stay safe in open water...
Wear a life jacket, especially when boating or in deep water
Check conditions before swimming (tides, weather, water temperature, etc.)
Swim with a buddy or with other supervision
Whether in the pool or open water, preparation and awareness are key to a safe and fun time swimming!
