Swimming is an excellent, low-impact exercise for seniors as it builds heart health, mobility, and mood. It is important to review age-related precautions to help you enjoy an enjoyable, and equally safe, swim.
Common issues amongst senior swimmers include:
Slower reaction that can make self-rescue difficult
Medical conditions, such as heart disease or arthritis, which impact stamina/movement
Medications that induce dizziness or fatigue
To ensure safety in the water:
Swim with a partner or in the sight of a lifeguard
Warm up! Try to avoid sudden immersion in cold water to reduce shock risk
Use accessible entry/exit points like pool stairs or ramps
Consult a doctor before starting a new swim program, especially with chronic conditions
Swimming can be a healthy, rewarding activity for a lifetime. Water can be a gentle workout partner to those of all ages.
